Pierre Cardin invents the future
Article by: Cherry RipePierre Cardin likes to talk about selling his multibillion- dollar fashion empire, but at the ripe old age of 88 he's just got too much going on. The indefatigable Cardin leaps out of his chair and waves a tiny designer-style metal box. 'It's a sewing kit, for travellers!' a slightly disheveled Cardin says. 'I think it will bring in lots of money. After all, everyone needs to sew on a button from time to time'. Whilst he is openly excited about the big project, he is more secretive about other 'hot' ideas. 'Let me just say' he says smiling cheekily, 'cold necks are a thing of the past... I'm in conversation with my design people about putting knitting needles, two of them, balls of wool and some simple skill together to change the face, or should I say 'neck' of cold winter days.
I have also discovered a fabric that actually repels water that falls from the sky; attached to a simple wire frame, I think it will revolutionise winter'. Will the originality ever stop? 'Not until I'm rotting in the ground' he says with that devilish grin. We hope he'll shock us with more before then.
