Tongue-twister volcano erupts

Eyjafjallajoekull volcano errupts in a glorious display of power

Smoke could be seen rising from behind Eyjafjallajoekull glacier and volcanic ash filled the sky after the eruption that began around midnight on Sunday following three weeks of localised earthquakes.

The eruption occurred in a remotely populated area about 125 kilometres (75 miles) east of Iceland's capital Reykjavik and caused 600 people to flee their homes.

The risk of floods posed by melting glacial ice prompted the authorities to declare a state of emergency and to immediately evacuate the area.  Rangers had no trouble convincing locals to flee or in some cases, get a good vantage point.  A local farmer wanted to show his cow the pretty colours but police didn't want animals near the scene.  The farmer was happy to see the lights but lamented, "The worst part in all of this is to leave our animals behind at home."

As exciting as the eruption was the day did have its tragedies.  A Christian camp from Canada had been camping on the mountain.  When a ranger tried to warn them of the danger he had trouble communicating.  "I kept yelling to them and pointing at the volcano 'Eyjafjallajoekull! Eyjafjallajoekull!'.  They just smiled with tears streaming down their faces and ran directly at the volcano.  It was the craziest thing I've ever witnessed."

A photo of the campers was taken on a cell phone as they smiled near a smoking Eyjafjallajoekull.  The one remaining survivor, Scott,  told doctors that when they heard the ranger they thought he was speaking in tongues. 'Eyjafjallajoekull! Eyjafjallajoekull!' was interpreted as a sign that the rapture had begun and that Jesus was returning.  "We were just so happy.  All of us just headed towards the light.  It was beautiful".
